Introductory Information

ENTRY TO SCHOOL

Normally pupils enter Wick High School at the S1 stage from eleven primary schools in August each year.

A full induction/transition programme is provided for pupils, with close liaison between the Guidance and Learning Support staff from Wick High School and the primary schools. A number of other subjects are also closely involved with Primary Schools at this stage.

A meeting is held in June each year for the parents of the new first year pupils and there are visits by the pupils themselves to Wick High School during the summer term.

Parents of pupils joining the school at other times have open access to the Rector and Depute Rectors for full consultation as to individual needs and arrangements.

The curriculum, attendance and personal details (date of birth, address, emergency contact address etc) of each pupil are stored on the school's administration computer. Under the Data Protection Act parents may see their child's computerised records on request.

CAREERS

The school has a well-stocked Careers Library housed within the main library.  This section of the library is open to all pupils, who are strongly encouraged to make good use of this facility.

Staff from the Careers Service interview pupils as the need arises and parents are welcome to attend.  Additional interviews can be arranged by the Guidance Teachers.

Senior pupils are encouraged to attend careers talks given by various colleges, universities and employers, and to attend the biennial Careers Convention.  Many other opportunities for linking with industries are available including work experience and work shadowing.

CAT testing

By clicking HERE parents will be able to download a guide to these tests.

LIBRARY

Wick High School has a library with over 11,000 general and reference books.

There is also a computerised information centre where pupils can use the latest technology for research.  A Careers library is situated within the Main Library.  It also has a wide collection of books, pamphlets, videos and computerised information as well as the Internet.

The School Librarian, Mrs Peat, will offer advice and assistance to pupils who wish to borrow books or who wish to refer to material for the completion of class assignments.  All English classes visit the library to borrow books once a fortnight.
